Artist Jennifer Drinkwater | The Secret White Coffee Mug

from $12.50

Some things are better shared over a cup of something warm, in a quiet room, with someone who gets it. You know who that is.

Jennifer Drinkwater — "JD" — is one of five Kate Shu Collective STAR Resident Artists, and one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary community art. A Mississippi Delta native, JD is an artist, visual storyteller, paintbrush author, and cultural paint-journalist whose work asks one simple, transformative question: What's good? That question became the foundation of The What's Good Project — JD's visionary entrepreneurial venture that travels into communities, listens deeply, paints what she finds, and gives a portion of every sale back to the people and places that inspired the work. It is art as journalism, as gratitude, as civic action. JD holds an MFA in painting and spent years as an Associate Professor of Art and Visual Culture at Iowa State University, where she also served as Community Arts Specialist for ISU Extension and Outreach — helping communities use art to build relationships, economic opportunity, and social capital. Her life's portfolio spans mural installations in restored Nebraska prairies, knit-bombing projects, Delta-inspired school murals across Central Iowa, and public art collaborations on Iowa main streets. She has conducted artist residencies from the Mississippi Delta to the heartland of Iowa, and she paints in layers — deliberately — because she believes, like the communities she documents, that what's underneath the surface is always worth seeing. Her Ames studio at 312½ Main Street is, in her own words, as magical as stepping onto Platform 9¾. We think that's exactly right. "When we shift our focus from what's wrong to what's right, we can affect positive change where we live." — Jennifer Drinkwater
