Artist James Hall | Songbirds & Blossoms — Gray Catbird & Prairie Rose Hardcover Journal

$19.95
If John Coltrane had feathers, he'd be a Gray Catbird. This remarkable songbird is nature's great improviser — cycling through squeaks, gurgles, whistles, and borrowed melodies, remixing everything it hears into something entirely its own. Disjointed, surprising, and utterly impossible to stop listening to. Paired here with the Prairie Rose — wild, resilient, and achingly beautiful in the way that only things grown without compromise can be. Open James Hall's Songbirds & Blossoms journal and write something only you could write. James Hall is one of the leading flutists of his generation — an international soloist, chamber musician, educator, and artist whose extraordinary career has taken him from Carnegie Hall to concert stages across North America, Central and South America, Africa, Europe, and Asia. A winner of Artists International, James made his Carnegie Hall debut recital in 2004 and has since performed with the Orquesta Nacional del Paraguay, Orquesta Nacional de Panamá, Kansas City Civic Orchestra, Greeley Philharmonic, Boulder Philharmonic, and the Southeast Kansas Symphony, among many others. As co-founder of the celebrated Colorado-based duo970 with pianist Susie Maddocks, James tours the world performing flute and piano works from the baroque to the contemporary. In 2021, the duo commissioned and gave the world premieres of works by American composers Paul Elwood and Stephanie Ann Boyd — and their 2024 album, Songbird, became the inspiration for the very collection you're holding in your hands. As a chamber musician, James is founder and artistic director of The Chattanooga Sound Project, and performs with ensembles including Chimera, Last Train, and Wood&Metal. Since 2009, he has been the professor of flute at the University of Northern Colorado, where he has mentored generations of young musicians. James performs exclusively on his handmade 10k gold Burkart Elite flute with platinum head joint. The Songbirds & Blossoms collection was born from a deeply personal collaboration — James's music, Kate Shu's original floral artwork, and the botanical illustrations of Professor Gary L. Hightshoe, Emeritus Professor of Landscape Architecture at Iowa State University and one of the foremost authorities on native North American plants. Three artists. One vision. A product line that lives at the intersection of music, nature, and art. Kate and James have been friends since their days together at the University of Missouri Kansas City Conservatory of Music — laughing until they couldn't breathe, racing each other on the elliptical until the machines protested, fueling up on coffee before rehearsal, and making memories that have kept them close for nearly three decades. "Even with all of the goofiness," Kate says, "when James steps onto a stage, the energy in the room is instantaneously converted to a sense of artistry, elegance, boldness, and exquisite perfection. He's wicked good." "The magic is the music." — James Hall Cover art by Kate Shu & Gary L. Hightshoe | A Kate Shu Collective exclusive, available only at the Monarch Shoppe. Each James Hall journal is a 5.5" x 8.5" hardcover journal featuring 80 lined pages, a ribbon page marker, and an expandable inner pocket — crafted for those who believe the best stories deserve to be written down. Printed with museum-quality detail that honors every nuance of the original artwork. A Kate Shu Collective exclusive, available only at the Monarch Shoppe.
